In today’s crime and accident reconstruction, it is increasingly common that photos or videos of the incident scene are used to assist the expert and attorney in deducing what did, and did not, happen. PSI uses  the process of Laser-Aligned Photogrammetry to make the most of these visual records of the event.

Generally speaking, photogrammetry is used to extract spatial information such as dimensions of objects or distances between objects depicted in a photograph. PSI pioneered the use of Laser-Aligned Photogrammetry, allowing our engineers to develop 3D models of crime and accidents scenes and locate critical physical evidence with increased accuracy.

Typical uses for photogrammetry include:

  • Determine length of skid marks in a vehicle accident scene
  • Determine the points of rest of vehicles
  • Determine the specific location within a crime scene of important critical evidence, such as cartridge casings, clothing, bodily fluids or personal effects
  • Determining the height of a person captured on video or photograph
  • Determine the location of a camera used to record video or photographs of a crime or accident scene.
  • Determine the location of a camera used in recording daytime of nighttime visibility studies, at any point in the video or film process.

Combining our Laser-Aligned Photogrammetry with the 3D working Model allows PSI to create 3D accident and crime scenes that maintain fidelity to the actual scene, all while allowing the trier of fact to clearly visualize the results and the underlying accuracy of the process.
