3D Laser Scanning

Precision Simulations, Inc. has been at the forefront of Laser Scanning with these pioneering milestones.

  • First Forensic Animation based upon Laser Scanning data - Santa Barbara 1999
  • First Animation admitted into trial in US based upon Laser Scanning data  - Honolulu 2000
  • Pioneered Laser-Assisted Photogrammetry (LAP) - 2003
  • PSI has performed and directed more than 250 3D Laser Scanning projects and over 1000 3D Forensic Animations.
  • PSI’s Laser Scanning data & animations are routinely admitted in trial.
  • Pioneered Laser-Assisted Ballistic Trajectory Analysis - 2008

100% in-house expertise and equipment.
Unlike many firms who contract outside vendors to perform their 3D Scanning, PSI has a dedicated team in house to ensure the highest possible accuracy and impact. PSI utilizes multiple scanning systems and has developed a suite of in-house tools to extract the maximum benefit from these incredibly rich data sets. No other firm has been using 3D Scanning in forensics as long as PSI.

Benefits of PSI's Laser Scanning Techniques

3D Animation/Trial Graphics
PSI’s Laser Scanner captures scenes and objects with such fine detail that the 3D models and animations that we create have an incredible level of realism, and equally important, foundational accuracy to ensure the fidelity needed for admissibility.

Today's jurors are influenced by TV shows such as CSI and 48 hours. Their expectation is to be educated about case facts and analysis in a visually compelling manner. The data captured by the Scanner is itself visually striking and is unparalleled in its ability to depict the data in a compelling and intuitive format. Animated fly-throughs of the data are often among the most visually compelling evidence the jury will see in a trial.

Preservation of Evidence and True Incident Conditions
One of the most powerful benefits of Laser Scan documentation is the scanners ability to capture every detail of a scene and object and preserve it on the computer precisely as it was the day the data was collected. This Virtual Model is not effected by subsequent changes or remedial measures, and allows the attorney to analyze any aspect of the data as issues arise later in the litigation cycle.

Remote Measurement
Due to the long range (up to 300m) of the scanners laser system, scenes can be documented from a remote location. There is no longer a need to shut down roadways or risk personnel to get data from highly trafficked areas. In addition, potentially dangerous locations, such as hi-voltage power lines, can be documented without risk or specialized permits.

Ballistics Trajectory Analysis
3D Laser Scanning can dramatically increase accuracy and precision in determining a shooter's location from the angle of bullet entry. Rather than use hand measurements of angle, and trace back techniques, 3D scanning uses the power of the laser beam to measure the angle precisely. Using the analysis power of the computer to trace back the trajectory, error in the final results are minimized. PSI has pioneered techniques specifically for use in ballistic analysis and is experienced in testifying in their support in Federal court and written FRE Rule 26 reports.
